The T-cadherin is an atypical member of the cadherin superfamily. In contrast to the classical cadherins, T-cad­herin lacks the typical transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains but is membrane-associated through a glycosyl­phosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. It is distributed ran­domly over the cell except in the intracellular contacts in cell mono layers. This protein can mediate Ca²⁺-dependent homophilic binding but these interactions are weak be­cause of the absence of linkage to the cytoskeleton. This suggests that it does not contribute to cell adhesion. T-cadherins may have multiple signaling functions in vascu­lar remodeling processes [16,17], can act as a guidance receptor and probably has a role in ‘sensing’ neighboring cells and informing its host cell of the local environment [18].
