Abstract

Mental retardation (MR) affects up to 3% of individuals in the general population. In MR group, there is an excess of males versus females (approximate male-to-female ratio 1.3. The latter usually is explained by relatively high frequency of X-linked recessive mutations associated with MR. X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) is estimated to cause over 10% of all cases of mental retardation and has a prevalence of 1.8-2.6 cases per 1,000 achieving as high frequently as 1 per 600 males. (Ropers and Hamel, 2005). To estimate XLMR frequency, we studied the male-to-female ratio among MR affected children and addressed most frequent easily detectable X-linked syndrome, fragile X mental retardation syndrome (Fra(X) syndrome). There was a significant excess of males in Russian cohort of mentally retarded children. Thus, according to our data the male-to-female ratio in children with MR (IQ<85) was 1.8 (765 boys/426 girls). This indicates that 28.5% of mentally retarded had XLMR. This was calculated taking into account the speculation that no females are affected by XLMR (Ropers and Hamel, 2005). For mild and borderline MR (50<IQ).
